The Carpet Replacement Guide to Complete Floor Restorations After Water Damage

Blog

When water damage affects flooring, some of these materials will need to be replaced. Carpet is one of the materials because it can absorb contamination. Usually, the best option is to completely rip the carpet out and install new carpet, but there is work that needs to be done during the process. The following carpet replacement guide will help you with installing new floors after water damage.

Check the Subflooring

The first step in dealing with the flooring problem is removing the carpet and padding. Once you are down to the subflooring, it should be inspected for damage that needs to be repaired. Any issues with rot need to be repaired before the new flooring can be installed. The tack strips that are used to stretch the carpet during installation also need to be inspected. You might want to ask your carpet installer if they can be reused or if it is a better idea to install new tack strips when the new carpet is installed.

Reinstalling New Carpet Padding

In general, carpet padding is easy to install. Some padding is glued on top of the old floor, and some are stapled down. In either case, the new padding will adhere better to the subfloor if the old subfloor is clean and dry.

If the subfloor is old and brittle, it's a good idea to replace it with a layer of plywood. If it's too damaged or wet, the new carpet can't be installed. You can install a thin layer of plywood sheathing to provide a better base for installing the new carpets or other flooring materials.

Choosing Your New Carpet

When you are replacing the carpet, there are a lot of options to consider when it comes to installing new carpets. You might want to ask the installer for samples of different styles of carpet that are antimicrobial and stain-resistant. You can also use carpets that are designed for high traffic areas to provide more protection against future damage.

Reinstalling Baseboards and Trim

When the new carpet you chose has been installed, the trim around the base of the floor is probably still missing and needs to be reinstalled. This is usually the baseboards but can include other door trim and moldings that come in contact with the floors. You can ask the installer if they can reinstall the baseboards or replace them yourself.
